Translation notes: in the previous song, Faust was absorbed in that fantasy world created by Mephisto. After that, in this song, we see that the era came to an end, and there’s destruction around. Faust explores the ruins of the reality with anger in his heart, but regardless of that, he tries to go forward into the unknown future, he realizes that in this new era, there’s just two kinds of people, those that were eliminated by “natural selection” and those that wake up and move forward. Kirito uses the word 淘汰 which can refer to natural selection or processes performed to eliminate unneeded people (for example in a company, in English it’s called “weed out” so I decided to use this word for the translation), this means that there is a process to eliminate those that are not good enough, and the DNA (of the human race) is improved as a result through evolution.
The artificial god is revealed and he celebrates this result of course. Faust realizes there’s nothing much to do at this point, and he doesn’t know in which group he will fall into (when he ponders if he will sink or if he will survive), he also admits he can’t get away from trying to be always at the top, referring probably to his ego; here Kirito uses two interesting phrases 旗を振る which literally means to “carry a flag” but it has a figurative meaning of taking the lead as well, which is what fits better in this portion, and the other interesting phrase is 先陣を切る this literally means to “cut through the vanguard”, the vanguard meaning the front part of the troops in an army formation, but the figurative meaning is to get ahead of others, and this is also what fits better for the song, because Faust is referring to his ego and his drive to be at the top. So, later he heads towards what lies in the opposite side after the path is cleared up, because there’s still a long road for him (and for me, 6 songs left! LOL).
